Hi Joe I know what you mean about the popcorn ect.......... just to have SOME, may lead to over indulging........ so maybe steer clear............. you have done so well without them so far. I smoke............. gave it up for a year, and the craveings NEVER went away. Took it back up about 2 years ago......... silly me We have HOT Christmas weather over here......... so mainly eat outside............. salads and BBQ`s etc. Some people still do the traditional hot meals etc. We have already had a few very warm days........ but it has rained non-stop now for 2 days....hahahaha.... typical Melbourne weather. ALL oil prices have increased........ more noticably in Fuel prices (gas for cars). It is SO expensive here at the moment. When we have winter........ we have cold , wet windy days......... some days may have very strong winds that may cause some destruction, but on the whole, our weather is no where near what you would experience. It only snows in the mountains here....... not in the suburbs. Occasionally, so areas (Close to the mountain regions) may experience a very fine layer of morning snow, but nothing that neads to be shoveled away. My flu sysmtoms went away without a doctors visit. I had pains in my left neck glands, which came and went periodically (felt it again yesterday, but today i`m ok). I probably should see the Doctor if it persists. I receive the flu injection every year. Sad to hear you are experiencing limited stocks over there. Over here, the Doctors put on extra staff for a few days, just to give the flu injections every year... (Mainly to their senior patients). Hope the physical therapy is helping your knee. Sometimes it can cause more pain, due to the increased movements........ but it is neccessary. I checked out the links............. there will always be arguements for or against, as you know. I think each individual has to determin what works best for them. I did laugh at the "Mainly Water loss" statement........... I can`t see how people who loose 100+ pounds can be told it is WATER not FAT loss....hahaha Like you said.......... you lost your extra weight.......... feel a lot better, and your Doc is keeping tabs on your health. It seems to be working for you I like to read anything on low carbing................. never know what you may find out.. Take care......... and i`ll check back soon.

dawn i can remember the time i had with the cigarettes. i must have quit 100 times before finally stopping. that was many years ago, but, you know, i still miss it! when someone lights up and i smell that first puff of smoke, i am brought right back to where i could start again! crazy after 20 or more years, but it is an enjoyable habit. Up here, smokers are now persecuted--no smoking in public buildings(including bars and restaurants), so you can see them gathered outside during breaks and lunches--no matter what the weather. I would have a difficult time doing that, but, I cannot put people down for smoking--so very few things in life are enjoyable.
I need to put this in front of you for some input/advice: I am getting a little concerned about the stix(just about always in the middle(between 40 & 80 but never not colored)). Yesterday, here is what I ate:
Breakfast: Two large bowls of low card cereal with the low carb milk and 3 strawberries along with three or four tablespoons of melon--low carb cereal is 9 grams and the milk is around 5 & I don't know exactly about the fruit--say it is 6--this would total out at about 35 for breakfast. I worked through lunch and had 32 ounces of water by noon-finished the entire 64 by 2 PM and had 24 more by 10 PM.
Supper was 2 cheese hamburgers on the grill with two of the low card rolls(13 carbs each) along with some chunks of chicken and mixed fresh vegetables I had cooked in some spaghetti sauce I had made(maybe 5 carbs total) and I also had a generous helping of tossed green salad with olive oil and vinegar. Naturally, while I was cooking I ate 3 or 4 slices of American cheese! Supper totaled out conservatively at 30 +.
Snacked here last night on generous hands full of smoked almonds(at least 2 carbs) and walnuts(2+) along with some salted Macadamia nuts(1). Total of at least 5. This was washed down with a bottle of the low carb beer(2.6 grams).
Total carb count for the day was a minimum of 70! I ate quite a bit the day before also, not as much carbs though.
I also did a whole bunch of heavy physical work yesterday(digging to repair drainage problems outside).
It seems like the stix might not be telling me something or, possibly, I am off base with what I am using them to do and that is to be an indicator of how much fat cells from stores I am loosing. Any ideas?
I certainly know it is not water weight as I know how much I have lost and certainly know how much I drink!
BTW, I have not really had too much movement in the weight--still from 7-10 pounds under what I wanted to be. This is making me happy, especially since the waist seems to be getting a little smaller and my arms and legs and face(so I am told) cannot get any smaller!
However.
Thanks for the time. Joe

Hi Joe, Sorry about the long delay, but My Mother passed away suddenly, so I had a lot of things to do there, and had to shift house. We are now back up and running PC wise, so I`m checking my boards. We actually lost all our "Favorites", and it is a mission trying to remember the actual NAMES of the sites we used to frequent. Anyway, i`m back. It seems diet wise that you are able to consume a large number of carbs, without putting on weight. It is all a matter of monitoring your progress, and if the weight starts to creep back on, or you feel sluggish, or have uncontrolable carb cravings, just cut back a bit, and see what happens. I have never been a fan of ketosticks, so don`t revolve your whole diet profile around them, as a lot of factors ( water intake, time of the day, medications, different foods consumed, etc) can alter the true readings. It seems that you have found a wide variety of LOW CARB foods, to follow a normal eating pattern.......... which is what it is all about. If it is working for you, continue. As for the smoking.............. same here............ smokeing is banned in public places (bars, resturaunts, shopping centres, offices etc).......... too many court cases where companies have had to pay out big dollars for "passive Smoking". It looks terrible with the staff gathering outside of buildings to smoke..... leaving butts everywhere. I think ALL smokers still have craveings, no matter HOW many years they have not had one. It`s a test of inner strength to NOT light up and start the vicious circle again. Hope to hear from you soon. A lightening storm has just started, after a fairly warm day, so I want to get off the PC. Dawn

Dawn, I am so sorry to hear about your mom! Geeze, that is really something. Was she ill at all? My dad passed away--right away one evening with my little 5 year old walking with him; nothing outwardly wrong-he just 'sat in his chair hard' as Jill told me, and that was it. No chance for a good bye or any conversation-good for him but tough on us.
My condolences to you and your family.
We can talk later.
Suffice it to say that nothing has changed here---sitx(my tool that keeps me honest) and the weight have stayed the same. The Thanksgiving feast was a little different, but I passed through it without mashed potatoes!
Later, and, again, I am so sorry to hear about your mom.
Joe

Thanks for the condolences Joe................ and sorry to hear your Dad passed so unexpectedly in the company of your 5 year old. Very sad indeed. My Mother had emphasema........ and I always thought Her breathing would slowely decline........ leading to the need for an oxygen bottle........ but that wasn`t the case. We were in the kitchen talking after dinner, and all was fine. Mum went into Her room to watch TV, and within half an hour had a massive stroke down her left side. Dale actually hear her, as he was in the kitchen. She was trying to get up out of bed, and was in a lather of sweat, so Dale came to get me. I knew as soon as I seen Her face that she had had a stroke, so got Dale to call an ambulance. This was about 7.30pm on Tuesday night (9th nov). I went to the hospital with her, and rung the rest of the family, while the doctors worked on her. (i`m the youngest of 7). By wednesday, she was moved to intensive care, but was not improveing. { with a stroke, any improvement should show with-in 24hrs}. All the family who didnt arrive tuesday night, were in on wednesday to see her. By this time, she could still squeeze your hand, but didnt talk at all. Thursday morning at 4.30am, the doctors called me to tell me she had had a second major stroke........... this time down the right hand side. {This would have left Her a vegetable}, so I instructed NOT to feed the thick tube down into her lung, to prolong her life. I went straight into the hospital. Everyone was alerted that the news was not good. Doctors said She may live for up to a week or more........ but she only lasted a couple of hours. Unlike yourself, we were all able to say our last goodbyes. It was an unexpected shock, but we are learning life must still go on. It doesnt help to crack up and crumble. I`m glad Mum didnt suffer. 15 years ago we watched my father suffer bone marrow cancer. We nursed Him at home. He suffered a great deal as all his bones were breaking. Morphine helped a lot, but didnt take ALL the pain. It was a blessing when He went. Then there was my grandmother 5 years ago........ but I wont go into that................ all too depressing. Point is, My mother......... like your Father, didn`t suffer. Congratulations on getting through Thanksgiving without Potatoes. Shows just how far you have come. Well done to you. If the stix keep you honest....... keep them up. It`s all working for you. I`m still not back on plan........... maybe in the new year. Just getting ready for Christmas , and going interstate for a few days in the New Year. { To see Dale`s Family}. Not looking forward to the 7 hour drive......... but you do these things to see family. What`s Santa bringing you?

Hi Dawn Tough to find time lately...work is pretty busy, and in my line, when there is work, you take and do it!
Sounds like you have a long trip, but it is always nice to get family together....although, for me, sometimes it is more enjoyable after I leave!
Santa is bringing me(more so, my wife and at least one of the kids) a TiVo thing that records TV programs for you after you select a group or whatever. I am not a TV person but they have 'their programs' and they are not always home to see them. I would like to buy a large screen TV--Barb does too--but it is so hard to choose, with all the things you have to know.
My mom fell and broke her hip a number of years ago and has not been able to recover sufficiently to ever return home. That, coupled with memory and some other health issues, has kept her in a nursing home. Well, next week my brother and I(only kids) are thinking of hiring a van to bring her out for a ride and maybe stop for a cup of coffee. We are trying to line up remaining family to meet for a coffee with us. Sure, snow is forecast! Hopefully we can pull it off and all will work out.
What is Santa bringing to your home?
Later Joe

Hi Dawn Just checking in after the Holiday crazyies. Food thing held together through the tough days and it was enjoyable. I found this site that you may want to reference if you have not already--it is the Faq for the Usenet Low Carb Newsgroup and has a lot of information... www.grossweb.com/asdlc/faq.htmLet me know if you took a peek and what you think--there is an awful lot to read. Winter has set in her--I envy you as it must be nice and warm there by now. How was the trek across the country for the Holiday? Car rides are usually relaxing for me--w/o kids! Drop a note if you get time(you can email too-joe@delmarcomputers.com will work. I hope all is OK. Joe
