Thanks for the Link Joe Just goes to show that "low carbing" is not for Everyone, but then again, neither is low fat. It is finding what suits each best You might want to look into the South Beach diet........ low fat, more vegies.... beans/lentils...... low fat products, including milk..... all based on the low end of the Glycemic Index. I didn`t think of looking in the library for the tapes......... thanks for the tip! In Melbourne, we have the "Herald Sun" daily morning newspaper, along with the "Age" as the main ones, then their is "The Australian", and then we have local papers, delivered free to all houses. "The advitiser".... "Star"...... "Times"......... www.blackstump.com.au/news.htmIt`s 5.20pm here.......... off to feed the dogs, and fix the vegies to go with my pork chop . Dawn ;D

Thanks for the note on the newspapers. I will add one. I don't want to go back to the low fat thing---from what I understand and have experienced, it--the lack of protein from meat, along with the abundance of carbs--just eats away at the muscle and this is not either good or easy to get back. As we know it is hard to get weight either on or off only in the places we want it.
This low carb thing seems like something that has a lot of logic behind it and might just be do-able with any modest increase(5 or so per week)..say up to 50 or even 75. This number that is painting the strips for me just will be difficult to hang on to. All the corn I have grown in the garden this summer is not being eaten by me and I really enjoy it. Same for the abundance of tomatoes and peppers. However.
The popcorn may be something that also needs adjusting. The pork rinds, while being an alternative, well, I guess, will remain that. I have discovered pumpkin seeds though--hey, I think I am repeating myself!
Oh well.
Take Care Joe

What is tiring is the entertaining him. He is used to being very spoiled by all of us, and has had Mommy home his entire life and she dotes on him. He will only entertain himself for little bits of time, so I just get tired of the holding him in my arms, my arms hurt today a bit from it, and just the non stop talking and entertaining him. I enjoy it for the most part, but I just am worn out by the time he goes home. I know very soon he will start to play by himself more, so it will only be hard for a couple more months. It is just that I am not used to it anymore !!! Stephie ;D

busy here...but I wanted to give a complete update...
as i mentioned, went to the Dr yesterday to have blood drawn for the thyroid and cholesterol things...I asked to make sure there was enough taken to be sure all the stuff was tested for as the diet thing should have some effect on it...we'll see.
weight is consistent 165 on the scale--dipped one day to a nudge over 163...165 was the 'never can do' target for me, so I am somewhat happy. the start was 192...on Feb 22nd(as mentioned earlier, no fat from 2/22 to 7/22 when I was stagnant for 6 weeks at 170 and decided to give up the carbs!)
the ketone stix remain plenty colored in the morning, so, according to the 'rules', I am still using energy from fat cells to run the body which must mean I am staying under the carb intake per day. the only thing I really miss is the snacks, but, now that I have discovered those wonderfully salted pumpkin seeds, I may have that conquered too!
Even taking I am taking enough pills to choke a horse..(potassium, extra vitamins, flax seed oil pills, ugh), I was awakened to a leg cramp this morning--nice thing as you may know! So, now an extra potassium pill bringing the total to 3 per day, which is still probably not enough, but, the cramp, according to the Dr Atkins tape, means that the fat cells are being drained. ...so.....
Actually, I continue to feel better, and, if it weren't for a lot of service calls, I might even ave a chance to exercise!
It seems like the weight thing may have just about bottomed out--I wish the waist thing would! maybe there is something to this carb thing.
As per the 'tape', I plan to begin to eat 5-10 more carbs per day each week until I gain weight and then that will be the number i stick with. However, I will continue to do the under 20 per day until the blood test results are in--next Tuesday.
I took your advice and had a tomato yesterday. An old friend of mine turned me on to this a couple of years ago....slice a tomato and lay them on something that can go in the oven....cover with olive oil...and basil....and thin mozzarella cheese....(salt and pepper if you like)..under the broiler until the cheese melts ....then............they both are pretty tasty and give the house a wonderful aroma.....and, if you do the slicing thin enough, there are a lot of them!!
Have you tried the very expensive low carb milk? Different taste and feel, but, with a good shake before pouring and a bit of water mixed in, it really is becoming OK for me....and it has calcium, which apparently the leg is telling me I need more of.
anyway, that is my story today......
downstairs to an egg...with sausage.
Thanks for listening. Joe

Hi Joe Sorry to hear you are haveing leg cramps, but you are right....... potassium should do the trick Great to hear your feeling better...... and still in ketosis ........ if your body wants to drop more weight, it will.......... may just take some time, then all of a sudden a few pounds will fall. MMMMMMMHHHHHHH your tomato, oil, basil and cheese snacks sound Very yummy I haven`t tried the low carb milk....... being in Australia, our low carb products are VERY limited compared to the US .......... I have read a lot about it though... is it "Hoods" brand? Took me quite a while to work out what "Hoods" actually meant... LOL If we here in OZ want milk... we have to make it with cream, water and spenda. LOVE salted pumpkin seeds......... used to munch on them all the time at my sister`s house......... @ 1.2 carbs per Tablespoon, not a bad snack Dawn

As I re-listened to the tape(again!) I find that there is a third mineral missing that could cause leg cramps--magnesium, maybe? I will have to go through it again. I take the calcium and potassium so what the heck is one more! Yes it is Hoods--the company that has a blimp too! This is an old company as we used to have Hoods Ice Cream as a kid--what a memory!
The pumpkin seeds do the fiber too, but Atkins says to look away from seeds a bit, but...... My package(David's) says: "Serving Size-1/4 Cup kernel(26g) equates to 1/3 cup in the Shell(37g)--servings per container about 4....carbs--per serving 3g-1g dietary fiber & 8 g Protein. I like them. I also would even try beef jerky but they all seem to have some sugar..
Anyway. thanks for the time Joe

hehehehe... You WILL be rattleing around will all those pills, but if they help, they are "must Haves' "Hoods" is the milk I see others on different forums useing, so it can`t be bad As for the pumpkin seeds, like anything else, it all depends on the different packs doesn`t it........ it`s amazing how much the carb counts differ.......... and a great source of fibre I hear there is now an Atkins DVD coming out in December (Walmart is takeing orders for it now)........ can`t wait to see if it is released here in Australia........ If it is, i`m getting it ;D Dawn

Hi Just checking in. not much changed in the last couple of days, but I have been confined here in the office with a barrage of systems that just have problems, so I have had the opportunity to partake of the bottles of water...and I have! I have also eaten more quantity than I probably should have--but they/it have/has been the good stuff--veggies and a lot of them but I think I am still holding pretty close to the 20 per day. I have been doing the romaine lettuce and other salad greens as dr atkins mentioned on the tape---maybe more than he mentioned, but close. The weight has not moved up at all and probably will go down a pound or so pretty soon. The arm exercises, well, I am trying and starting out/continuing slowly. I still think I move around and lug computers around enough to beg out of the exercise thing...
I miss the popcorn at night and look forward to a little soon...and regularly. In addition, I have to look into what he meant by fried sweet potatoes and why not white ones! I am going to retry the bread recipe without the sugar as the outer crust seems a bit 'odd tasting' and chewy and I think it may be from the sugar. I know that bread machines need sugar to speed up the rising process, so I will keep that in mind. Bread would sure ease the pain...the Hood milk, now that i have gotten the shake before using and adding a little water, actually is good! It also gives me some nutrition I need.
This does look like something I can live with! I need to find out more about some once in a while binging and how that would/will effect things. He mentions it on the tape with respect to Holidays and other special occasions.
My daughter and I found Quaker Q-smart Snack bars(peanut Butter/Chocolate Chip that advertise '3 Grasm Impact Carbs(Total Carb-8, fiber 2, sugar alcohol 3-which is how they get the 3). I love peanuts--don't really care for chocolate, but the things are very good! They were $3.69 for the 5 bar box at the local K-Mart. As I am writing this, I ate an entire one!! Just thought I would pass that along.
Well, back to work--the latest one to be repaired is ready for me.
Take Care, Joe ps,my oldest is in College in Tampa Florida, so we have been a bit nervous lately. It seems like things will be OK for her, but others in Florida may not be so luckyl
Speaking of lucky--or unlucky, what is up with the BS in Russia? What a crying shame about the little kids...and the adults! The world certainly is a bit different these days--God help the little ones and those that had to die because of some folks desires or needs.

Hi Joe If you are eating more than usual, at least it is in vegies ........ Dis I mention the "South Beach" diet to you? It follows the same Lines at Atkins induction for the first 2 weeks, then you slowely add foods back in while looseing weigh. The SB diet allows things that Atkins doesn`t, like after the first two weeks, you start to gradually re-introduce "Healthy Carbs", such as fruit, grainey bread, brown rice, wholemeal pasta, sweet potato. bran cereals, "POPCORN" ;D, milk & Yoghurt. SB goes on "Low Fat" meats and dairy, and the allowed vegies are UNLIMITED (you don`t count carbs on this diet). It all revolves around the Glycemic Index of foods, that is why "Sweet potato" is prefered over "White Potato", as it doesn`t cause such a large "sugar/insulin spike" as the white ones do. If you want more info on SB diet, I can email it to you. I have all you need without buying another book. I just thought SB may suit your taste buds more than Atkins. You sound very busy at work with all those repairs........ as you said, lifting all those computers all day MUST be building those ups up! Be careful of "LOW CARB" bars....... they only advertise the "Net Carb" count, but dont count the "sugar Alcohols". Sugar alchohols ARE carbs, but are one`s that are not supposed to cause a sugar-rush....... but they are STILL carbs! A lot of people (me included) will not loose weight munching on these. ... The occasional one would be OK though... maybe once a month or so. I LOVE peanuts also, and was eating a spoonful of Natural Peanut butter... (love that ;D). We have been hearing about the Hurricanes in Flroida........ very scary stuff .........I`m sure all precautions will be taken to provide safety, so try and not worry Hope your daughter does well at College....... I only ever completed 9 years of school (leaving when I was 15/16 ). If you want to get a head in life, a solid education is a must now days! That business with the Russian school hostages is very sad indeed ....... can`t even imagine how the families must be feeling........ Some people just don`t value the human life . Take care of You & your`s Dawn ;D
