I just wanted to share the success I've had with managing my daughters weight with a lower carb diet. My daughter is 11 months old and has been an overeater since she was born. This has given me a great deal of concern because she has been near the 100th percentile since she was 3 months old. She just never seems satisfied and wants to eat all the time.
So about 2 months ago when she still hadn't shown any signs of slowing or slimming down I decided to try a modified "baby atkins" with her to see if it would help. I have ensured she is getting enough fat and calories to not lose any weight because you don't want infants to actually lose weight. They should however gain weight at an appropriate rate.
So what I did was cut her table foods back to 1 tablespoon per food group. Instead of mostly fruits and flour-based carbs like macaroni and white bread I increased her green vegetables and added cheese, processed meats like bolonga and hotdogs (chopped up) and switched her to whole grain bread, sweet potatoes, peas and beans.
The result? She now eats less frequently and when she does she gets full for a change and actually wants to stop eating before the plate is empty. She continues to grow length-wise but isn't putting on the weight as fast. This has really helped her go from a chunky baby to a well proportioned pre-toddler.
My other child, a 23 month old boy, has the opposite problem. He doesn't want to eat anything at all, ever. Not only do I have a hard time getting him to sit still for a meal, once he is in the highchair, he won't eat anything I offer him. The only thing keeping him alive is applpejuice and peanut butter (which he eats with a tablespoon from the jar!). I am going to be meeting with Nurses for Newborns next week to get some help for him. I am at my wits end. He's underweight for his age and height and I know for a fact he isn't getting enough fat or calories. Suggestions are welcome!
